Saudi-led alliance has stated that it has requested US to stop its mi-air refuelling support as it can handle the same itself. The decision has thus brought the involvement of US in the conflict to an abrupt end.
Saudi Arabia further said that the decision was made after consulting US. It said the kingdom has development its facility to independently carry out inflight refuelling especially in the on-going Yemen conflict.
The Saudi Press Agency SPA stated, “As a result, in consultation with the US, the coalition has requested cessation of inflight refuelling support for its operations in Yemen”.
Jim Mattis has also expressed support for the Saudi decision and has also suggested a continued role for US in Yemen conflict, especially in helping the Saudi-led alliance to bring the civilian casualties to a bare minimum and also expansion of humanitarian help.
Mattis said, “The US and the coalition are planning to collaborate on building up legitimate Yemeni forces to defend the Yemeni people, secure the country’s borders and also contribute to counter al-Qaeda and ISIS efforts in Yemen and the region”.
The decision has come amid the growing US efforts to bring an end to the Yemen war as it has led to the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Atleast 10,000 people have lost their lives since the conflict began in 2015 as per UN. The data has not been revised and the estimates are definitely much higher.
