Russian administration has announced that it will conduct the biggest war games seen in last 40 years that will also have participation by the Chinese army. The exercise will be held between September 11-15 and will involve huge military participation with more than 1000 aircraft, over 300,000 troops, 1000 military aircraft and two naval fleets and all the airborne units.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the exercise will be on a never seen before scale both in terms of area which is covered and the participation of troops. Shoigu said in an official statement, “Imagine 36,000 pieces of military equipment moving together at the same time- tanks, armoured personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles. And all of this, of course, in conditions as close to combat as possible”. The exercise has been named as Vostok-2018 and will be conducted in central and eastern Russia. The timing of the exercise is vital as the tensions between West and Russia are mounting over multiple issues. NATO has built up its military presence along eastern Europe as a deterrent against any potential Russian aggression especially after it annexed Crimea.
Kremlin has also justified the cost for such a huge exercise due to the adverse international situation. Vostok will demonstrate Russian ability to handle a massive conflict i.e. will reinforce the idea of assertive Russia while increasing its defence budget and also its military presence.
