US cuts Palestinian aid by $200m

US has cut economic aid to Palestinians by $200m due to the problems faced by the international community is delivering aid to Gaza due to the control of Hamas. Latter have not only endangered the lives of civilians but have also worsened the already critical humanitarian crisis.

Trump administration has assigned amount to other high-priority projects in other places thus slashing the funds for aid programmes in both West Bank and Gaza.  PLO or Palestine Liberation Organisation has slammed the move as “the use of cheap blackmail as a political tool. The Palestinian people and leadership will not be intimidated and will not succumb to coercion”. Other representatives of Palestinians stated that the Palestinian rights are not for sale. The statement issued by Hanan Ashrawi, the member of PLO Executive Committee read as, “There is no glory in constantly bullying and punishing a people under occupation. The US administration has already demonstrated meanness  of spirit in its collusion with the Israeli occupation and its theft  of land and resources; now it is exercising economic meanness by punishing the Palestinian victims of this occupation”.

The decision has come at a critical time when Palestinians are undergoing a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza Strip as more than 160 Palestinians who were demanding their right to return to parts of Israel from where they were expelled in 1948 were killed by Israeli troops as they were demonstrating along the fence with Israel.

US relations with Palestine took a downturn when Trump administration had recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel post which the Palestine authority scraped all ties with US.
