Russia has stated that it will begin deliveries of S-400 missile systems to Turkey next year which is one year in advance. The timing of the announcement is critical as it has come at a time when US-Turkey relations are at an all-time low.
The Chief of Rosoboronexport, the state weapons exporter of Russia has stated that the Russian contract with Turkey is executed as per the timeline. The company also said that it will move to local currencies while making deals with their foreign trade partners.
The $2.5 billion deal will make Turkey the first country of NATO alliance to get advanced surface-to-air missiles. S-400 which is incompatible with the NATO system is capable of engaging with targets within a range of 400km. US has expressed concerns over the same.
US-Turkey ties which were passing through turbulent times had sunk even further when Turkey refused to free the jailed US pastor who is being held in Turkey over the charges of terrorism. US has slapped severe economic sanctions on Turkey, which has led to a freefall in Lira.
