Malaysia thwarts Rhino ‘horn’ smuggling attempt

Malaysian custom authorities have seized 50 rhino horns worth $12m from card board boxes at the Kuala Lumpur airport. The Chief of Department, Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, stated that the officials had seized a huge stockpile of animal bones probably from leopards and tigers in the same shipment. The total weight of horns was 116 kg thus making it the largest in history in Malaysia. They were being taken to Hanoi in Vietnam.

The shipment which had a variety of animal parts were not entirely from Asia which has given rise to concerns about the scale of smuggling going on in animal parts and the multitude of routes used by smugglers.

Vietnam is considered as a huge market for rhino horns which is thought to possess medicinal values. A single kg of Rhino horns is hugely priced to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. It is widespread belief that it can cure cancer. Rhinos face a threat of extinction as per IUCN.
