Javad Zarif, Iranian Foreign Minister has stated that the brand new Iran Action Group formulated by the US government with its covert mission to overthrow the Republic of Iran will miserably fail. It is the 65th anniversary of US-backed coup which had overthrown Iranian government. This is usually the day when the anti-American sentiments are running strongly in Iranian veins. Zarif took the occasion to compare the present American regime with the 1953 coup, and said history will not be repeated.
Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, had created Iran Action Group, with Brian Hook as its head and the Special Representative for Iran to take forward the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against Iran especially after US has withdrawn from the JCPOA.
In a tweet, Zarif stated, “65 years ago today, the US overthrew the popularly elected democratic government of Dr. Mossadegh, restoring the dictatorship & subjugating Iranians for the next 25 years. Now, an “Action Group” dreams of doing the same through pressure, misinformation and demagoguery. Never again”.
Iranian Speaker also voiced his concerns and said that the coup which took place 65 years ago serves as the apt example and a perfect lesson which teaches that Americans cannot and should not be trusted.
US and UK had crafted the whole removal of the democratically elected Prime Minister Dr. Mossadegh as he tried to nationalise the oil industry of Iran. The coup again brought Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi who was later toppled in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The coup was and still is an open wound in Iran’s relations with US. Madeleine Albright was the first American official who admitted the role of US in the coup and the grave setback it gave to the Iranian politics.
Ever since the ousting of Shah, both Iran and US have shared no diplomatic relations. There was a thaw in the relations with the JCPOA which was only short-lived as Trump administration pulled out from the deal apparently unhappy with the sunset clauses which President Trump thought have made it the worst pact ever to be negotiated.
