Pakistani lawmakers in its lower house of Parliament have elected cricketer-turned politician, Imran Khan as their new Prime Minister of Pakistan, thus clearing his way to form a coalition government. Speaker, Asad Qaiser, declared that Khan has received 176 votes in the 342-seat National Assembly.

His closest rival Shehbaz Sharif from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz  has only won 96 votes.

Although Imran Khan’s party Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf has won maximum number of votes in the July 25 general elections, but will need support from independent candidates and other small parties to form the coalition government as it did not win enough seats to form a majority.
