Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has announced a temporary ceasefire with Taliban till June 20. The President, however, specified that the fight against the ISIL will continue. As per the official tweet of the President, the ceasefire will begin from 27th of Ramadan till the fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr and stated that the ceasefire is an opportunity for the Taliban to introspect their campaign of violence against innocent people is only leading to their further alienation from the society. The ceasefire thus presents the resolve of the Afghan people and the government for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Taliban have continually fought against the Afghan government and the International Security Assistance Force ISAF led by the US. The activities of the group have also spread to regions over the Durand Line especially the regions of Khyber Pakhtunwala and Waziristan. Hibatullah Akhundzada who heads Quetta Shura is the leader of the insurgent group. The group has been involved in terrorist activities against the Afghan nationals.
The successive governments in Afghanistan have carried out operations against the insurgent group with the primary aim of disrupting and dismantling their network and thereby force them to the negotiating table.
