Syrian activist groups namely White Helmets, Douma Coordination Committee have accused the regime of deadly chemical attack on the civilians in the city of Douma which has killed and wounded many people. The activists have stated that the regime had dropped barrel bombs filled with toxic gas which caused great suffering to people and children leading to suffocation and choking.
However, the Syrian regime has denied the allegations stating they are an attempt to stop the army advance on the last rebel stronghold. The Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM) have said that people were suffering terribly, many have been rendered unresponsive, paralyzed, others with foam and a peculiar spittle in their mouths. Doctors have stated that there has been a huge chemical attack which has left 25 dead and about 500 wounded.
The US has reacted sharply to the attack and has strongly condemned the use of deadly chemical weapons against its own people. The US has held Russia responsible for the deadly targeting of Syrian populations with chemical weapons. Russian support to the Assad regime and its apparent inability to stop the use of any chemical weapons in Syria has put its intention to resolve the Syrian crisis underscan. The US has reaffirmed its resolve to hold the guilty of such acts responsible.
The Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on its citizens before as well, the last one on Khan Sheikhoun in 2017 when Sarin gas had killed nearly 100 people. The attack resulted in US attack on Syrian airbase by 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
