The Trump administration has finally come out strong against Russia and has expelled 60 Russians and has ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate at Seattle over the alleged attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with a military grade nerve agent of Novichok class which had been produced by the Soviet Union in the 1970s.
The expelled individuals include 12 Russian Intelligence officers who work at Russian mission at the New York headquarters of UN. The decision also reflects the increased concern of the administration about the growing intelligence activities by Russians.
Other 40 expelled diplomats are employed at the Russian embassy in New York. They have been served a 7-day window to leave the country along with their families. White House has stated, “The United States takes this action in conjunction with our NATO allies and partners around the world in response to Russia’s use of military-grade chemical weapons on the soil of United Kingdom, the latest in this ongoing pattern of destabilizing activities around the world”.
Moscow has come out strongly against the ongoing expulsions and has vowed to expel at least 60 staff members of US diplomatic missions in Russia.
