President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Turkish forces are only a few kilometres away from the centre of the Syrian Kurdish-controlled region of Afrin. He expressed faith that the siege of Afrin city centre is near as the armed forces are getting over the last obstacles.
The latest offensive is a part of the Operation Olive Branch which was launched by Turkey to push the YPG- a US-backed Kurdish group from Afrin which lies in northwestern Syria. Erdogan also stated that the Operation will end after the capture of Manbij following Afrin. Turkey considers YPG as a terrorist group with ties to the banned PKK or Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Latter had waged a long fight for almost three decades against Turkey which had resulted in the killing of many people.
The claims have been refuted by the YPG.
