Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, left everyone speechless when he stood by to defend the new Polish Holocaust law.
PM Morawiecki, put to rest all criticism that the new legislation amounted to the criminalisation of any kind of Polish complicity during Holocaust. He stated that “Of course it’s not going to be punishable, it’s not going to be seen as criminal to say that there were Polish perpetrators, as there were Jewish perpetrators, as there were Ukrainian; not only German perpetrators,”. The defenders of the law justify the same as needed to counter any mistaken blame for the crimes which were committed by Nazis during Polish occupation by Germans. Polish Senate had passed the law with a 57 percent voting. President of Poland Andrzej Duda defended the Bill and ratified the same to defend the reputation of the country. The Holocaust claimed lives of 3.2 million Jews during the Nazi occupation after occupation of Poland. Many Poles were honoured by Israel to save Jews during the war. History is also replete with incidences where some Poles gave information about Jews in hiding for rewards and also participated in Nazi-triggered massacres including Jedwabne where many Jews were killed by their neighbours.
Poland has always disapproved of the phrases like “Polish death camps” which points to an understanding that Poland shared the responsibility for the death camps like Auschwitz. The Camps, as maintained by Poland were both built and operated by Nazi Germany after they had invaded Poland in 1939. The new law, however, even criminalises any references to individual incidences and occurrences of complicity by Poles with Nazis. There is abundant evidence to prove the latter in history. The law has sparked outrage in Israel as they see it as an attempt to manipulate and rewrite history.
The recent comments by Polish PM at the Munich Security Conference have been described as outrageous and as per Israeli PM an apparent inability to understand history. Mr Netanyahu, spoke to Mr Morawiecki on phone to discuss the same and as per PMO, it was”pointed out that the goal of the Holocaust was to destroy the Jewish people and that all Jews were under sentence of death” and that distortion cannot be corrected by another distortion.
There is a public backlash in Israel against Poland and Swastikas have been drawn on the gates of Poland’s embassy in Israel.
