North Korea has held a military parade just a day before the start of Winter Olympics in South Korea. The parade mostly happens in the month of April and advancing the same has again given a blow to the warming ties during Olympics. The date has been shifted for the first time in the last 40 years. However, South Korea has announced that its PM will meet the Olympic delegation sent from North. The delegation will comprise a 22-strong team including the ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam and Kim Yo-Jong. Latter is the sister of Kim Jong un and will thus become the first member of the ruling party to visit South Korea.
The parade was standard with the centre of attraction being the Hwasong-14 missiles along with Hwasong-12 and Pukguksong-2 intermediate-range missiles. However, TEL vehicles were completely absent which pointed to the fact that North Korea is trying to overcome the shortage. The parade marked 70 years of Foundation of Korean People’s Army.
North was adamant about the parade despite criticism from US and others. The prime concerns were the timing of the parade just one day before the Winter Olympics.
